Cumberland County Historical Society Speaker Series

Cumberland County Historical Society 981 Ye Greate Street, Greenwich, United States

January 28th at 2pm “Tribal Rights are Important Rights”: The Origins, Travails, and Impact of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribe V. The State of New Jersey Brianna Dagostino, MA Dagostino’s published thesis details the history of her tribe and how modern-day racism over Indian casino gaming has affected not just her tribe but indigenous nations all throughout Turtle Island. Feb 25th at 2pm " Man's Best Freenemy" by Tia Antonelli “Man’s Best Frenemy” will unpack how Cumberland County reacted to rabies and the wild dogs that were accused of spreading the disease. Rabies has been a threat to humans since the dawn of our existence — so why was there such an uptick in fear in the late 19th century? March 24th at 2pm Crap: A History of Cheap Stuff in American Dr. Wendy A. Woloson Woloson tells the history of crap from the late eighteenth century up through today, exploring its many categories: gadgets, knickknacks, novelty goods, mass-produced collectibles, giftware, variety store merchandise. As Woloson shows, not all crap is crappy in the same way—bric-a-brac is crappy in a different way from, say, advertising giveaways, which are differently crappy from commemorative plates. Taking on the full brilliant and depressing array of crappy material goods, the book explores the overlooked corners of the American market and mindset, revealing the complexity of our relationship with commodity culture over time.

A BROTHER’S REVIVAL Music of The Allman Brothers and More- Levoy Theatre

Levoy Theatre @ 126-130 N. High St., Millville, NJ 08332

A Brothers Revival with Allman Brothers / Black Betty Bassist, David “Rook” Goldflies There is one band with the musical roots to carry on the music and spirit of the Allman Brothers Band; that band is A Brothers Revival. Former Allman Brothers’ bassist (78-82), and bandleader of A Brothers Revival, David “Rook” Goldflies spent years touring and performing with Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe. With the Allman Brothers, as well as Dickey Betts and Great Southern, David toured the U.S. and Europe and learned first-hand how the Allman Brothers sound was created. He performed for crowds as large as 100,000 people in arenas such as Soldiers Field and Mile High Stadium and on television shows like Saturday Night Live, Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert, and Solid Gold. Rook received a Grammy nomination for the Allman Brothers instrumental “Pegasus” from Enlightened Rogues; a Billboard Top 10 certified Gold album. David is recognized by many fans as one of the Allman Brothers‘ most dynamic bass players, with his playing akin to the aggressive style of the original Allman Brothers‘ bassist, Berry Oakley. Other influences include Jack Bruce, Miroslav Vitous, Charlie Haden, Stanley Clarke, and Jaco Pastorius. Joining Rook in A Brothers Revival is vocalist and keyboardist Mike Kach who toured with Dickey Betts and Great Southern for more than a decade. Mike was Dickey’s choice to carry on the sounds of Gregg Allman’s stellar blues performances. When Mike sings the first few words of the popular show opener “Ain’t My Cross to Bear,” it’s clear that Mike has a gift that brings people back to when they first heard Gregg Allman’s unique voice. Rook leads A Brothers Revival through all the Allman Brothers‘ songs that we love: Jessica, One Way Out, Statesboro Blues, Midnight Rider, Melissa, Ramblin’ Man, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Soulshine, Whipping Post, and a few surprises for the fans that enjoy the deep jams. These brothers perform the songs with authentic passion while paying homage to the improvisational spirit of the original band, pushing the songs to new heights. Artist Website: abrothersrevival.com

Intro to Pysanky

WheatonArts @ 1501 Glasstown Road, Millville, 08332

Explore the art, symbolism, and joy in creating pysanky, a springtime Ukrainian tradition of decorating real eggshells. Students will learn the age-old method of applying hot beeswax to an emptied eggshell using a stylus, over a succession of dye baths. When the pattern is completed, the wax is removed over a candle flame, revealing the colors and pattern. This pysanka, or Ukrainian Easter egg, can then be displayed on a stand or hung as an ornament. Materials, supplies, and instruction will be provided to complete one or two eggs. Kits and finished works by the instructor will also be available for purchase so that students can continue the craft at home. Seats are limited and booked on a first-come, first-reserve basis. Besides an auto-generated email receipt, you will receive a confirmation email from the Director of Education and Artist Services, Pamela Weichmann. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us at 856.825.6800 ext. 112 or by emailing pweichmann@wheatonarts.org.
